The teleservice sector already employs 3.3% of the 60,000 refugees living in Brazil — the majority Venezuelan — and is preparing for the arrival of the first expatriates from the conflict between Israel and Palestine.
According to the Brazilian Teleservices Association (ABT), the sector employs approximately 2,000 refugees.
As they are bilingual, this counts as a differentiator for Brazilian customer service companies that maintain operations abroad.
“The performance of companies [brasileiras] has grown abroad, which creates a gap for employees who speak other languages. The sector’s relationship with refugees is a two-way street. At the same time that we have helped transform these people’s lives, they have helped us gain an important market”, says Antonio Guilherme Noronha, president of ABT.
According to him, the hiring of refugees reflects a market movement. Some of the main companies operating in Brazil already have operations focused on serving consumers in other countries.
This change helps resolve one of the biggest barriers for this group: finding a job. Two out of every three foreigners suffer from unemployment, according to the NGO Isso Refugiado.
