Brazil is the fourth country that downloads the most mobile applications in the world — behind only China, India and the United States. Brazilians downloaded more than 10 billion apps in 2023, shows report by market intelligence startup Rocket Lab.

Among the countries that spend the most, Brazil is in 11th place, after the rich China, USA, Japan, South Korea, United Kingdom, Germany and Canada.

Rocket Lab chooses the advertising market as the area with the most potential in the Brazilian digital economy, but cites competition and the lack of measurement standards as challenges to advancing in the activity.

While the amount of money invested in ads was down 2% globally, it was up 21% domestically. Global advertising investments are around US$ 336 billion (R$ 1.64 trillion).

Data from TIC Domicílios, from NIC.br (Núcleo de Informação e Coordinação do Ponto BR), show that 85% of the Brazilian population over ten years old have access to mobile internet, which is above the global number surveyed by Rocket Lab: 66.6%,

Owners of mobile devices spend an average of five hours a day in front of screens, with 88% of that period dedicated to using applications, according to the report “Mobile Market Analysis 2023.”

Social networks are the main focus of advertising investment and mobilize 4.76 billion of the 5.16 billion people with internet access in the world. This number equals 63% of the population.

People today buy more from smartphone apps (58%, in 2022) than from the internet (42%). Mobile devices had already taken precedence last year.

Worldwide, streaming applications for audiovisual productions lead the list of most profitable segments via direct user spending in 2022. Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Primevideo, Hulu and Disney+ make up the sector, which received US$ 7.2 billion (R $35 billion) last year.

With these companies betting on exclusive content, RocketLab projects that users will spend US$ 14 billion on video streaming in 2027.

Dating apps, short videos and video sharing, comics and music complete the list of users’ favorite expenses while browsing on their cell phones. In total, people spend $167 billion directly on the app.

Only in Brazil, streaming applications earn together US$ 4.2 billion per year. Most of that money comes from advertising — $2.42 billion.

Rocket Lab estimates that this sector of the economy will have revenue of US$ 5.84 billion in 2027.

The new players in the banking sector are expected to lead the national mobile application market in 2023. The segment should move US$ 224.7 billion (R$ 1.095 trillion) this year, projects Rocket Lab.

By 2027, banks and digital payment platforms are expected to reach 146 million users. The most downloaded apps of 2022 were Nubank, Caixa Tem, FGTS, PicPay and C6 Bank.
