Teatro Amazonas receives modernization works for accessibility of PwD’s

The cultural space gains an electric platform for wheelchair users, identification plates in Braille and technological equipment

One of the state’s main historical assets, Teatro Amazonas, is receiving works to install an electric platform, replacing the metallic ramp for wheelchair users and people with limited mobility. The modernization of the theater, promoted by the Government of Amazonas, through the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, aims to facilitate access for people with disabilities (PcDs) and create an environment with the most appropriate technology.

The frieze ramps will also be replaced by more modern models. The restrooms and dressing rooms have identification plates in Braille. The initiative has the support of the Secretariat of Infrastructure of Amazonas, the Advice on Inclusion and the Department of Historical Heritage.

According to the Secretary of Culture and Creative Economy, Marcos Apolo Muniz, the reforms favor and democratize access to one of the greatest cultural attractions in the State. “The Amazonas Theater is a source of pride for people from Amazonas and bringing this electric platform, more suitable ramps and identification plates is a way to expand and facilitate access for all. We have this commitment to offer conditions to people with disabilities in our spaces”, highlighted Apolo.

The director of Teatro Amazonas, Sigrid Cetraro, emphasizes the concern with inclusion on the part of the State, which seeks to enhance accessibility with specific reforms and acquisitions of up-to-date equipment to serve PwDs. “We care about the inclusion of our visitors and spectators, so the electric platform that replaces the steeper ramp facilitates access to the audience floor for those who do not have an electric chair. With the platform, everyone will be able to get around easily”, explains the director.

Too many resources

The accessibility advisor at the secretary of culture, Sheila Campos, adds that, since last year, one of the favorable changes has been the use of the resource for communication accessibility for the hearing impaired, through translation into Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) with tablet use.

“Before, the videos were transmitted on a monitor that was at the top of the stage, but it made it difficult to see the sign language and the show at the same time. Now, the hearing impaired receive a tablet, which transmits the image of the sign language interpreter, during the show and, thus, he can accommodate himself in any place intended for the public, in the Theater”, said Sheila.

For the visually impaired, the space has an audio description feature, used in all shows promoted at Teatro Amazonas. In this case, the visually impaired person receives a radio with headphones, where he listens to the descriptions necessary to understand the show in its entirety.

Last year, the space completed 126 years of history. In addition to theatrical shows, music and dance, the Teatro Amazonas is open for guided tours from Tuesday to Saturday, from 9am to 5pm, and on Sundays, from 9am to 1pm.

Entry costs R$ 20 (whole) and R$ 10 (half). For Amazonians, access is free upon proof of place of birth.
