Teatro Amazonas is the stage of the 5th Film Festival of the Amazon, from the 22nd to the 25th of this month

Manaus (AM) – With 50 films selected for the 2023 schedule, the 5th Amazon Film Festival – Olhar do Norte will be held from the 22nd to the 25th of this month, in three spaces in the center of Manaus: Teatro Amazonas, Teatro da Instalação and Palácio da Justiça.

In addition to film screenings, the program includes talks, debates, workshops and awards. All programming is free and can be checked on the website: www.festivalolhardonorte.com.

In total, 16 short films compete for the awards at Mostra Amazônia. Dedicated exclusively to works from the states of the Legal Amazon, the competitive exhibition will award Best Film by the Jury and the Public, Direction, two prizes for Best Acting, Script, Cinematography, Editing, Art Direction and Sound. Films from other regions outside from the Amazon will be at the Olhar Panorâmico Exhibition, which in this edition will have 10 works, available online at Sonoraplay (www.sonoraplay.net).

For children and young people, six films were selected for the Olhinho Show. Films from all over the country will be at the Mostra Outro Nortes, which had 10 films selected.

The 5th Amazon Film Festival – Olhar do Norte will also have guest films, including three short/medium films and three feature films that will have special screenings at the opening and closing of the program.

“It is our edition with the most indigenous-themed films, and with the most films directed by women. Works by directors who place themselves as participants in a moment of political and cultural effervescence, and who also point out particular paths as a language of cinema”,

highlights the curatorial letter, signed by Diego Bauer, Victor Kaleb and Flávia Abtibol, curators of this edition.

Legal Amazon

For the first time, the “Olhar do Norte” Amazon Film Festival opened registration for the entire Legal Amazon, including the possibility for filmmakers and directors from Maranhão and Mato Grosso to enroll in the main exhibition, called Amazônia.

For the secretary of Culture and Creative Economy, Marcos Apolo Muniz, the possibility of exchanging experiences between audiovisual producers from all over the Amazon is one of the most important aspects of the festival.

“Having Teatro Amazonas as a stage for this rich exchange is also very rewarding, as it includes directors, with encouragement and recognition, in addition to fostering the creation of an audience”,

says the secretary.

The festival is organized by Artrupe Produções, with the support of the Government of Amazonas, through the State Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy, in partnership with Cine Set.

On the Internet

For the first time, a mesacast studio will be set up in the hall of Teatro do Amazonas, to carry out exclusive interviews with directors, actors and producers and special guests of the event.

The content will be produced by those who understand the subject: Caio Pimenta, director and critic of o Cine Set, the largest Cinema portal in Northern Brazil and media partner of the festival, and Iana Moral, podcaster and partner of Sonoraplay, the official streaming platform of the festival in 2023.

Estúdio Cine Set e Sonoraplay will have interviews and chats in three formats: podcasts on Deezer and Spotify edited by João Bosco Soares, cuts for Reels on Instagram and the entirety of the chats in mesacast format on the Cine Set YouTube channel and in Sonoraplay itself.

The production will also have the support of students from the Cine & Vídeo Tarumã project, a film club at the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) with more than three decades of existence.

Live broadcast

The Amazon Film Festival arrives on open TV for the first time. The opening ceremony will be broadcast live on TV Encontro das Águas, a public broadcaster in Amazonas, direct from Teatro Amazonas, on Tuesday night (22), starting at 8 pm.

The transmission will end before the screening of the opening films of the festival, the Amazonian short “Castanho”, by Adanilo, and the feature “A Flor do Buriti”, by João Salaviza and Renée Nader Messora, awarded at the last Cannes Film Festival.

For Caio Pimenta, media partner of Olhar do Norte 2023, showing the ceremony live on TV Encontro das Águas is a rare event on the Brazilian festival circuit.

“Traditional cinema events in the country with decades of history do not get the same space on open TV and their ability to reach thousands of people. That is why it is so valuable to have this opportunity to present what the festival is all about, to show that there is quality cinema made by valuable artists in the Amazon and in the Legal Amazon, in addition to attracting people to attend Teatro Amazonas in the other sessions” ,
