Teatro Amazonas hosts the release of the film ‘Pirarucu

This Sunday (20), at 7 pm, Teatro Amazonas will host the launch ceremony of the film “Pirarucu – o respiro da Amazônia”, which shows how the sustainable management of pirarucu is a strong mechanism for protecting the Amazon region and the peoples of the forest . Admission to watch the film will be free.

Produced by Banksia Films and directed by Carolina Fernandes, an audiovisual producer based in Amazonas for 12 years, the film shows how the management of the pirarucu was developed, highlighting the importance of traditional knowledge combined with the technical knowledge of researchers from the Instituto de Desenvolvimento Sustentável Mamirauá.

The film also shows how the Middle Juruá region moved from a scenario of work analogous to slavery to become a true example of sustainable development in the Amazon.

“With the decline of rubber and its bosses, the residents of the region organized themselves and, encouraged by the struggle for emancipation led by Chico Mendes, conquered the demarcation of Conservation Units (UCs) and the commercialization of agroextractive production in a more autonomous and fair way , banning middlemen and creating their own associations”, explains director Carolina Fernandes.

According to the director, the film poetically portrays how the communities have improved their quality of life by engaging in this sustainable activity, which saved the pirarucu from extinction and protects the forest. “Everyone is invited to attend this very important moment. It has no VIP list to watch the launch. All you have to do is arrive, as admission is free,” comments Carolina.

According to her, the public will also learn about the history of the Association of Rural Producers of Carauari (Asproc), which was the first organization created in the region and is still a great example for the Amazon, coordinating activities in the territory with a commitment to the forest. and its peoples.

In addition, the film presents the positive results of this activity in the Middle Juruá. In 11 years, the pirarucu population has already increased 55 times in protected lakes, as a result of participatory management of pirarucu, which generates an important source of income, improving the quality of life in communities by valuing sustainable products from the forest.

Carolina Fernandes is an audiovisual director and producer based in Amazonas for 12 years. Trained in the British and French television industry, she has experience directing and producing environmental-themed TV series and documentaries with credits on BBC, National Geographic Channels, Smithsonian Channel, HBO, Netflix, Animal Planet, Arte France, among others.

Additionally, Carolina is director of the Discovery Science series “Mysteries of the Abandoned” in the Amazon. Produced and acted as assistant director in the film “Ex-Pajé” (awarded at the Berlin Film Festival in 2018 and at the É Tudo Verdade festival) and in the film “The Last Forest” (winner of the public award at the Panorama show at the Berlinale in 2021) , both directed by Luiz Bolognesi. Her work is intimately close to the Amazon, always testifying to the enormous capacity of this region to preserve itself while transforming its landscape and its people.
