Summer arrives, heating up the Brazilian economy with the presence of international tourists in the country until the end of next January. The logic is simple: more foreign visitors, more money injected into the economy and more job and income generation. Manaus will see a growth in the number of foreign visitors of 23.7%.

An Embratur survey by cities shows the increase in the presence of foreign tourists in the six most popular capitals in Brazil in January 2024 in relation to January 2023. Choosing the closed month of January helps to select visitors who chose to visit the country precisely through the summer. In relation to the total number of seats on flights for January, according to the Embratur Data panel, there are 1,421,301 seats planned for 6,103 flights.

The next position is with the capital of Amazonas, the largest state in Brazil. Manaus will see a growth in the number of foreign visitors of 23.7%, with emphasis on Brazilians, once again, followed by Americans, Portuguese and Italians. And when comparing January 2023 with the same period in 2022, Manaus saw the number of foreigners increase by 30.5%.

The city that will see the biggest increase for the period is Natal (RN), which will have 26.6% more foreigners. The capital of Rio Grande do Norte also saw the biggest increase in January 2023 compared to the same month in 2022, 54.7%. And the countries that sent the most international tourists to the city and its dunes were, from largest to smallest, Argentina, Portugal, Italy and the United States.

Second place goes to Salvador (BA), which will see a growth in the number of foreigners in January of 24.7%, with Argentina, the United States, Portugal and Italy as the main emitters, in that order. In the relationship from January 2023 to January 2022, the growth in the number of visitors from abroad was 15.8%.

Rio, São Paulo and Recife

The capital of Rio de Janeiro and the capital of São Paulo came in fourth and fifth place. Rio de Janeiro will see an increase in international tourists of 19.9%, with Argentina, the United States and Portugal as the main emitters with the United Kingdom. São Paulo will see growth of 17.7% with the same decreasing sequence and the same sequence of issuers as the capital of Amazonas. The two cities saw the number of tourists grow in January 2023 compared to the first month of 2022, respectively, by 21.9% and 15.7%.

And in sixth place, but no less important, Recife (PE) will see an increase in the number of foreign tourists of 6.7%, with the main emitters, once again, being Argentina, the United States, Portugal and Italy. Furthermore, in the summer of last year, the number of international visitors to Brazilian Venice was 39.2% compared to the previous period.

More numbers

Brazil returned to pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels in the number of flights offered by airlines. In both 2019 and 2023, this number was 64.82 thousand flights. The figure is also just over 40% higher than that of 2022, in which the supply was 46.2 thousand. The sums are part of a survey of international tourist arrivals in Brazil by Embratur’s Information and Data Intelligence Management.

Furthermore, between January and November the country had an increase of 152 new flights, including routes that had been suspended during the pandemic, when borders were closed in an attempt to contain the circulation of the Covid-19 virus. In total, there were 35 from Europe, 21 from North America, 72 from South America, eight from Central America, eight from Oceania and eight from Africa.

And in relation to the number of seats on flights, 2023 had a 32.47% greater offer than 2022 in 40.2% more flights. The sector continues to recover, although it has not yet caught up with 2019. There were 14.5 million seats in 2019, 9.7 million in 2022 (a drop of 32.7%) and 12.9 million in 2023. The data from this year are equivalent to 89.16% of the supply from the last pre-pandemic year.

The Embratur survey was prepared considering the end of the Public Health Emergency of International Importance, declared by the World Health Organization (WHO), decreed in May.
