As the sweat runs down your face, the concealer cracks or barely appears, the foundation evaporates and the pencil runs under the eyes, leaving an animalistic panda look. With the temperature getting higher and higher, scenes like this will be more common with the arrival of summer.

Some makeup and skin care tips can help this scenario and make it last longer. The first step is to let go of more robust coverage and opt for light layers of products, says makeup artist Vanessa Guimarães. A Sheet We talked to her and Angélica Silva, makeup artist and content creator, who gave a step-by-step guide on how to apply makeup in the summer heat and maintain your beauty.

Skin: protection and coverage

When thinking about makeup for the heat, durability, sweat and water are main factors to take into account. Therefore, skin preparation deserves more attention. Guimarães, who teaches self-makeup, highlights the importance of looking at the makeup label and choosing makeup that is sweat-resistant and long-lasting.

The first step for any makeup, regardless of the weather, is hydration. To achieve lightness in the summer, makeup artists recommend facial serums, which are more fluid. Those with drier or more mature skin can boost hydration with a cream.

The use of sunscreen is also essential. “There are people who want to skip the step because they think that sunscreen makes it oily,” says Guimarães, who recommends those with lighter, thinner or stick textures, which dry out on the skin.

There is tinted sunscreen, which can be used for everyday use, but depending on the brand, the shade options may be few and the finish may not be the best, leaving a thick texture. It is also worth remembering that it must be touched up throughout the day — which would not be so viable for those who want to wear makeup all day.

What Silva recommends is adding the use of the solar projector together with the base — if it has a protection factor (FPS), even better. The foundation can be liquid, ensuring a more fluid texture.

Guimarães states that there is the option of skipping the foundation step and using only the concealer, the tone closest to the skin, in specific areas of the face. The product can be applied with a sponge moistened with fixative mist.

After applying protector, concealer and foundation, Silva likes to apply fixative to fix these products on the skin. But he warns that it may not be the best option for those with dry skin, and it is better to opt for mist.

Makeup touch-ups

When touching up your skin throughout the day, use loose powder, preferably with sun protection that repels moisture and makes makeup last longer. It is versatile, removes oil and provides coverage. If you have dry skin, you can apply a mist with a protection factor.

The use of mist, a product that tones the skin, closes pores and soothes the skin after exposure to the sun, for example, is encouraged. “Hydrated skin is skin that is much more durable and more vibrant,” says Silva.

Regarding sunscreen, one option is to use it as a spray so you don’t need to apply it directly to the skin.

Creamy or powder?

Those who prefer more natural skin — to go to the beach, for example — can opt for cream blush, but it will need to be touched up throughout the day. The perfect combo for those who want durability, according to Silva, is to use the creamy first and seal with the powder. The same goes for the contour.

She also suggests applying it with a very fluffy brush and using little product. It’s worth remembering that this all depends on how much time the person has to invest in makeup, he says. “There are options of creamy sticks, which have a texture soft matte, for example. It’s very practical.”

Eyebrow

In hot weather, eyebrow waxes may not be the best option for those who like well-groomed hair, as they take a long time to dry and can start to run with sweat. It’s difficult to give it adhesion with the oil.

The alternative is to invest in eyebrow gel, which dries more easily and lasts longer. It doesn’t give the same effect as wax, but it is more practical and can be easily touched up throughout the day.

One tip that Silva gives is to exfoliate the eyebrow area at least once a week to stimulate hair growth and skin texture.

Mouth

The mouth dries out both in winter and summer, and also burns in the sun. Therefore, Silva says it is important to choose a lip moisturizer with a protection factor. “When you start putting on your makeup, apply the sun protection product, because as you put on your makeup, it works, it absorbs in your mouth and then you calmly apply your lipstick,” she says.

Eyes

There are waterproof mascaras, but a lot of people don’t like them because they are really difficult to remove. The alternative, according to Silva, are the resistant ones that wash off with warm water.

For those who still want to avoid the panda effect on their eyes due to the heat, use two mascaras: resistant mascara on the upper lashes and waterproof mascara on the lower lashes. “You can use the mascara in specific places to make it last well and to hold your lashes,” says Silva.

For those who want to prevent their eyeliner from running, the content creator gives tips on applying an eyeshadow over the product, this way, it seals in and lasts longer.

Cleansing and skin care

Keeping your skin clean is important, says the makeup artist. But, it has to be done sparingly. “We end up removing all the nutrients from our face, washing it many times a day, leaving that dry effect,” she says. Washing once a day is enough, preferably at night. Additionally, she recommends using a toner to help balance the skin’s oiliness.

Hydration can be done with a light cream, serums or gel moisturizers, recommends Guimarães.
