Sparkling wines are a hit at the end of the year for their double function: to celebrate and, more than ever, to cool off from the high temperatures. For this reason, wines with bubbles were chosen as the theme of the last Folha Prova of the year, divided between brut and muscatel.

Adding the two categories, 26 bottles were tasted, costing a maximum of R$150. Of these, 8 brut wines and 6 muscat wines were chosen as the best, taking into account characteristics such as flavor persistence, acidity and perlage (the bubbles present in sparkling wines). .

The labels were tasted blind at the French restaurant La Casserole, located in the center of São Paulo. Wines can be found for purchase on the wineries’ website, in markets and emporiums. Part of them was sent by producers and markets and another part was purchased.

Each category had a specific group of tasters, but Claudomar Régis, sommelier at La Casserole, and Thiago Mendes, founder of the Eno Cultura school, participated in both tables.

The section offers the reader a shopping guide and has already evaluated products such as white wine, olive oil, hazelnut cream, frozen cheese bread and ketchup. The result is not a ranking, but a list that seeks to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the products. See the judges’ comments below.

The bottles tasted were light and fit well with the Brazilian end of the year, with refreshment and fruit aromas with a more citrus and floral profile.

“These are wines that are evaluated for their capacity for freshness and fruit. They very much meet consumer expectations in this sense”, says Claudomar Régis, sommelier at La Casserole. In addition to him, journalists from Folha Tayguara Ribeiro and Silas Martí, the newspaper’s designers Márcio Sampaio and Silvia Rodrigues Filgueiras, and journalist Daniel Buarque, owner of @sommeliso, an Instagram profile that deals with labels worth up to R$, also participated in this category. 50.

Arte Brut Casa Valduga
It is a fruity sparkling wine and, for journalist Daniel Buarque, with a sweet perception. “It’s the type of wine with light weight, which is judged by its capacity for freshness and fruit”, said sommelier Claudomar Régis. Coming from the Vale dos Vinhedos region, in Rio Grande do Sul, it is made with 60% chardonnay and 40% pinot noir, using the traditional method.

Bohigas Brut Cava Reserva
For Tayguara Ribeiro, the aroma is reminiscent of yeast and bread, which can be a little cloying for those who don’t like this sensorial profile. Thiago Mendes got the traditional production method right, such as cava, sparkling wines produced in Spain. “It has notes of ripe red apple, some notes of candied fruits that are balanced with acidity, which gives it refreshment. At the end, aromas of hazelnut appear, giving more complexity to the wine,” he said.

Casa Perini traditional method raw
Unanimous among the participants, it was described as pleasant, festive and joyful by Silas Martí. “Of all of them, it’s the one I wanted to buy the most,” said Márcio Sampaio. For Claudomar Régis, from La Casserole, the wine has a balance of fruit and intensity. “The perlage is good, bringing a sensation of freshness. It has an aroma of ripe fruit and moderate fermentation notes. It’s one of the wines I liked most,” he said. It contains 80% chardonnay and 20% pinot noir. It is made using the traditional method in the Trentino Valley, in Farroupilha (RS).

Cave Geisse Brut
Made with chardonnay and pinot noir grapes in the traditional method, the wine from the Pinto Bandeira (RS) region divided the group. Márcio Sampaio and Silvia Rodrigues said that the product was bland. On the other hand, journalist Daniel Buarque liked the aroma that recovered odors from fermentation. “It demonstrates interesting bottle aging,” he says. For the sommelier at La Casserole,
the wine presented balance, with good fruit flavors.

Chandon Réserve Brut
It presented good acidity, refreshment and balance, according to the judges. “It’s fresh, easy to drink, but has a not very persistent flavor,” said Tayguara Ribeiro. Sommelier Claudomar Régis made the same observation: “It is a wine of medium intensity in aromas. But it was quite balanced between fruit, acidity and freshness.” Produced in Rio Grande

Aromatic and citrusy, the wine filled the mouth well and is not sweet, said Daniel Buarque. For the two experts, Thiago Mendes and Claudomar Régis, it stood out for its concentration of fruit, with notes of peach and pineapple, and freshness that persists in the mouth. Produced by Viña Carmen in Casablanca Valley, Chile, with the chardonnay grape.

Mumm Cuvée Reserve Brut
Made with chardonnay and pinot noir grapes and from Mendoza, Argentina, the label is made using the charmat method. For Silas Martí and Marcio Sampaio, it pleased with its lightness, refreshment and presence of fruit. Thiago Mendes, from Eno Cultura, agreed: “It’s a delicate wine, with
refreshing notes of lime, lemon and a light touch of white flowers”, he said.

Salton Gold Brut
The perception of fruit stands out in the wine, agreed Tayguara Ribeiro and Thiago Mendes. “It focuses on fruit, with an aroma of green apple, a touch of mint and a citrusy, refreshing finish. It’s the kind of wine that’s easy to understand and demands a second glass,” said Mendes. For sommelier Claudomar Régis, however, despite the freshness, it lacked intensity. “It was short on the palate. It’s a restrained wine,” he said. The label is made with chardonnay, pinot noir and riesling grapes, in Serra Gaúcha, using the charmat method.
