The State Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation (CECTI-SP) begins this Thursday (7), in the capital of São Paulo — a preparatory event in the state of São Paulo for the 5th National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation (CNCTI), which will take place from June 4th to 6th in Brasília.

Organized by the São Paulo Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation in partnership with Fapesp, CECTI-SP aims to debate the main challenges of ST&I in the state and how to contribute to the sector’s national agenda in the next decade.

“According to the guidelines of Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, it is essential to further stimulate science and technology on São Paulo soil. In the state of São Paulo, we find higher education institutions and internationally renowned research centers, they are true pioneers in the generation of scientific knowledge, promoting dialogues and debates that strengthen science through innovation and continuous research. This event seeks to discuss how to best take advantage of this competence and seek synergy in actions”, says the state secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation , Vahan Agopyan.

“It is a preparatory event for the 5th CNCTI, but the topics covered, such as financing research and innovation, strengthening regional research support systems, digital and energy transition, do not necessarily coincide with those of the national event. In any case, they are important for state politics”, he adds.

Over the course of two days, the event program will be divided into four thematic axes:

“Financing and Organization Models for Research and Innovation. The role of the State, Research Institutions, Foundations, NGOs, Social Organizations and the Public and Private Business Sector. Modifications and advances in legislation. Institutional challenges”;

“Strategies and advances in the training of human resources. The challenges of postgraduate studies. Incentives for a scientific career: incentives for young scientists, attraction of talent, inclusion and diversity”;

“Strengthening Regional and State Science, Technology and Innovation Systems. The São Paulo model: successes and challenges”;

And “Agenda of Strategic Themes for Scientific, Social and Economic Development. Long-Term Vision and Current Priorities. Mission-Oriented Research.”

In addition to lectures and debates, all eight sessions will offer ample space for discussions and recommendations. The Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Luciana Santos, will participate in the closing session of the conference, which will be held on Friday afternoon (8).

“The State Conference is part of a broad set of preparatory initiatives for the National Conference. It should focus on proposals and suggestions for Brazilian strategies, with special emphasis on how the strengthening of state and regional ST&I systems can contribute to stability and the increase in the local expression of Brazilian science”, comments Marco Antonio Zago, president of Fapesp.

Registration for in-person participation is now closed, but those interested in attending the State Conference virtually can register via the event page. The activities will be broadcast from 8:30 am on Thursday, via a Zoom link that will be provided to those registered.

It will also be possible to watch the event on Agência Fapesp’s YouTube channel. The links are:

The objective of the event will be to analyze the programs, plans and results of the National Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy (ENCTI) 2016-2023, in order to propose recommendations for the preparation of ENCTI 2024-2030.
