Soybeans: Despite the decline, Brazil produces 155 million tons – 03/21/2023 – Vaivém

With potential for 160 million tons, the Brazilian soybean crop this year should be around 155 million. Rio Grande do Sul, once again affected by severe drought, will have a production 5 million tons lower than initially projected.

The data are from the Rally da Safra, an annual crop monitoring program carried out by Agroconsult. In this 2022/23 harvest, 40,000 km were traveled and 1,050 crops were evaluated.

The Brazilian soybean crop, which was showing signs of another complicated year with losses, ended up recovering in several parts of the country. As a result, the drop in Rio Grande do Sul was offset by record average productivity in eight producing states.

While the Gauchos had an average productivity of only 36.7 bags per hectare, the Bahians achieved 67.4. The people of Paraná, who were also on the drought line, obtained 63.1 bags.

The average productivity in the country reached 59.1 bags per hectare, a high volume, but still lower than the 59.4 of the 2020/21 harvest.

This year’s super harvest, however, brings a challenge to the sector. Sales are delayed, and the disposal of such a large volume will bring difficulties, according to Agroconsult analysts.

Unlike Brazil, Argentina was affected by severe weather adversity. The production of the Argentines will retreat to only 25 million tons, 24 million below the initially estimated volume.

There is also a break in Paraguay, which produces 9.5 million tons. With that, the harvest of the three countries, estimated at 213 million, should be 190 million, according to the consultancy.

World oilseed production rises to 367.5 million tons, but is less than consumption of 370.1 million.

With such high production, Brazil has the potential to export 96.1 million tons, 22% more than last year. In the previous season, national production was affected by drought and was at least 20 million tons lower than expected.

For corn, the consultancy estimates the summer harvest at 28.3 million tons and the winter harvest at 97.2 million. If weather conditions favor it, the total harvest should reach 125.5 million tons, giving the country a record export potential of 51.9 million tons.
