Soybean meal is a highlight in Brazilian exports – 01/06/2023 – Vaivém

Soybean meal was one of the highlights of exports by the agricultural sector in Brazil last month. For the first time, the product led the ranking of exports in the sector classified by Secex (Secretary of Foreign Trade) as a manufacturing industry.

The country placed 2.76 million tons of soybean meal on the foreign market in May, 38% more than in the same month last year.

The world’s main exporter of bran, Argentina is having problems producing this input, due to the soy crop failure caused by drought in the region. Brazil occupies part of the market left by the neighboring country. Brazilian exports should reach 21 million tons in the year.

In the first four months, revenues from soy bran already amount to US$ 5.1 billion, surpassing by 18% the value from January to May last year. Volume increased by 10% in the period, and average prices rose by 7%, according to Secex data.

Exports of soybeans in grain, due to the delay of the Brazilian harvest and the slower pace of sales by producers in previous months, reached 15.6 million tons in May, a record for the period, but still below the 16.1 million April 2021.

Last month’s volume exceeds by 47% that of the same period in 2022, and revenues are up 23%. Prices practiced by the foreign market, however, were 16% lower than a year ago.

Rice exports also continue to be a highlight this year. From January to May, foreign sales totaled revenues of US$ 240 million, 48% more than in the same period last year. The domestic supply of cereal has fallen this year and production, for the first time in the last 25 years, will be below 10 million tons, according to Conab data.

The scenario improved for poultry and pork proteins, which saw an increase in sales, but it got much worse for beef, which recorded a 26% drop in revenues accumulated in the year. Volume shipped fell 11%, and prices dropped by 17% on average.

The Chinese market, the main one for Brazilian beef, was closed shortly after the occurrence of the atypical case of mad cow in Pará. It is now reopened, and total exports amounted to 168,500 tons last month, 11% more than in May 2022.

According to still preliminary data from Secex, agricultural exports, excluding products from the transformation industry, such as sugar and meat, totaled US$ 9.2 billion last month, 16% more than in the same month last year. In the accumulated result for the year, revenues are US$ 35 billion, with an increase of 7.5%.
