Solar energy is synonymous with respect for the environment and the Amazon, says president of Amesolar

The businesswoman believes in the potential of Amazonas to receive new investments in clean energy generation

Manaus (AM) – On the day that Amazon Day is celebrated (September 5), the question remains: what can be effectively done to preserve this region that is so important for the planet? For the president of the Associação Amazonense de Energia Solar (Amesolar) and founder of Future Solar Manaus, Helane Souza da Silva, the answer to this question inevitably involves the segment.

“We need to save natural resources. Solar energy is all about the environment. Using a clean and renewable energy source is synonymous with respect for the environment and our Amazon, which is the world’s hope in terms of a healthy ecosystem”,

The first woman to work with solar energy in northern Brazil, the businesswoman believes in the potential of Amazonas to receive new investments in the generation of clean energy.

“But, for that, we need to strengthen the will of the agents that are part of this sector, with our government having a more special look and, mainly, the local energy distributor meeting the premises of the regulation in force in the market”,

Born in the Santo Antônio community in Novo Airão (194 kilometers from Manaus) and an entrepreneur since the age of 19, the president of the newly created Amesolar – made up of 20 companies in the sector – comments that the State has favorable radiation for the production of solar energy , as well as extensive and available territorial area.

“And, in terms of representation, nothing is more perfect than the Amazon presenting itself as a potential producer of clean energy”,

Unfortunately, however, this does not happen, according to the Amazonian businesswoman, so much so that Amazonas currently occupies the 24th position among Brazilian states in solar energy generation, according to the latest survey carried out by the Brazilian Association of Photovoltaic Solar Energy (Absolar).

“The largest state in the Amazon in territorial terms being in 24th place in this ranking speaks volumes about what we still need to do”,

points out the president of Amesolar.

Towards decarbonization

In early August, the Federal Government launched the “Energias da Amazônia” program in favor of decarbonizing the region. With an investment of BRL 5 billion, the initiative’s goal is to transition power generation, which is mostly diesel fuel in isolated systems in the Amazon, to renewable energies.

According to Helane, the challenge of decarbonization is a worldwide movement, important to mitigate the results of the greenhouse effect. In this scenario, solar energy is a great ally, due to the fact that its raw material originates in nature (electricity is captured by sunlight) and because it does not emit polluting gases such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO₂) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂), which are harmful to health and the environment.

According to Helane, solar energy favors the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, being the best choice for those seeking efficiency and sustainability.

“The pressure to use our natural resources needs to decrease and, as the hope of the world, the Amazon has a duty to present itself as an example.”
