Manaus (AM) – The fires recorded in Amazonas, especially in the Metropolitan Region of Manaus (RMM), leaving the sky covered with smoke in this driest period of the year, cause health concerns. The alert is mainly related to children, who are more vulnerable to respiratory, skin and eye diseases, but it also applies to everyone, in general.

She highlights that children with a history of chronic respiratory problems, such as asthma and rhinitis, are the most impacted and may have their condition worsened.

According to the professor at Afya Medical Education, the first warning signs that should be observed in children are if they have difficulty breathing, incessant coughing, tiredness and burning eyes.

“In any of these conditions, the ideal is to look for an emergency service or, depending on the situation, go directly to the pediatrician who is already monitoring the child”,

Some everyday actions can reduce the impact of smoke on children. Doctor Elizabeth Ikino’s first recommendation is to keep them hydrated, offering water several times a day. Another guideline is to keep the doors and windows of houses closed when the environment is air-conditioned, and use air purifiers. According to the doctor, the use of masks in external environments is also recommended.

According to the Government of Amazonas, the intensified smoke particles in the capital come from fires recorded in RMM municipalities, such as Iranduba, Autazes and, more recently, Rio Preto da Eva and Itacoatiara.

The Government considers that “the most intense climatic factors this year have accentuated the concentration of smoke in this region”, highlighting the overheating of the Pacific (Super El Niño), which has made the capital suffer record heat, making it difficult for rain to form. and the dispersion of smoke, according to a note distributed to the press.
