Financial control

Serasa research reveals that joint account has been falling into disuse and that 40% of couples share expenses equally

With the aim of encouraging the necessary conversation about money between couples this Valentine’s Day, Serasa carried out a survey to investigate the relationship between love life and finances. According to the survey, financial planning is a habit that Brazilian couples say they carry out monthly (60%), although only 45% claim to know what the partner’s salary or income is.

The Financial Health of Couples study surveyed 1,456 Serasa base consumers across the country, between May 30th and June 5th. Regarding the division of bills, most respondents (40%) prefer to share expenses equally between partners and only 5% reveal that they do not help with the couple’s finances.

Another fact that draws attention refers to the lack of use of joint accounts: 85% of couples say they do not have this banking modality. For psychologist Valéria Meirelles, specialist in Psychology of Money at Serasa, opting for this modality requires a certain maturity of the couple and the relationship with finances between the partners.

“It is necessary to make it clear that this would be an account of the relationship and define how much each one can contribute, demonstrating the need to talk openly about money”.

Dialogue about finances is really not an easy task for couples. According to the survey, 52% of Brazilians agree that the financial situation directly impacts their love life, although 30% are neutral to the statement (neither agree nor disagree) and 18% disagree.

“As much as couples know that it’s important to have financial intimacy, the myth that ‘talking about money wears the relationship down’ is still very present. In practice, it should be the other way around.

comments Valerie.

Regarding the ways in which couples organize their expenses together, the credit card statement is pointed out as the most used way for couples to organize their finances (27%), followed by the online bank account statement (22%).

Among separated or divorced couples, asked about the main reason that led them to end the relationship, financial problems appear in second place (27%), behind difficulties in communication (41%). In addition, 19% of the total number of respondents revealed that they had already had their name negative because of their partner.

“Talking about money is not romantic, but it is necessary, many times to avoid even situations of patrimonial violence”,

Alert Valerie.

“It is essential that each individual knows what their rights are in a relationship – including when we talk about money”.
