Only two segments of the industry, pulp and paper and fuels and biofuels, managed to register growth in industrial production since 2014, when the industry employed 13.7 million people – the best moment in the historical series of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) started in January 2012.
The main negative highlights were printing and reproduction of recordings (-47%); manufacture of other transport equipment, except motor vehicles (-34%), manufacture of clothing and accessories (-38%), electrical machinery, equipment and material (-36%) and furniture (-37%).
And, among the 14 states surveyed by the IBGE, the biggest declines in industrial production, considering the period between December 2014 and May 2023, the biggest drops occurred in states in the Northeast and Southeast. In Bahia, the drop was 25.3% and in Ceará. 18.6%. In Espírito Santo, production dropped by 39.4% and in São Paulo, by 7.6%.
In seven states (PA, PE, RJ, PR, SC, MT and GO) there was growth, but it was insufficient to compensate for the situation in other states.
