Show ‘Cabaré Chinelo’ is nominated and represents AM in the Shell Theater Award

Manaus (AM) – ‘Cabaré Chinelo’ is among the nominees for the 34th Shell Theater Awards. The Ateliê 23 show competes in the “Energy that Comes from People” category, which rewards initiatives related to the theatrical universe with a positive social impact. The result will be announced on March 12th, in São Paulo.

Taciano Soares, director of the theater company, explains that “Cabaré Chinelo” was spontaneously nominated by São Paulo, after part of the jury watched the last performances in the capital of São Paulo, in November, at Teatro B32.

“That was the surprise! We had expectations about the national category, but being nominated by São Paulo means being recognized among the hundreds of pieces that were in the city during the year 2023”, commented the artist, who lives Kafter on stage and also signs the general direction of “Cabaré Chinelo”, with Argentine director and playwright Jazmín García Sathicq in co-direction. “It is the first time that Amazonas is in the Shell Prize and this is very significant.”

Taciano Soares highlighted that the work about women victims of international and sexual trafficking in the Belle Époque period in Amazonas has reached an important audience and reached people who have never seen a play and who had not yet paid attention to the theater made in Manaus.

“It’s not just the public that ‘Cabaré’ managed to approach and get so close to, but also institutions, events and awards that are important, they are interesting to show that critics are also attentive to what we have done, to what our work has stood out, whether through Narciso Freitas’ historical research, which adds to the research that Ateliê 23 does on bionarratives, or through the technical improvement of the scene, the way of acting in this type of theater set to music, but which is also biographical, combined with a very large group of people different in their experiences”,

assessed the director.

“I’m very happy to see that this mix made the show gain deeper layers in understanding, construction, and the way it was received. The nomination for the Shell Award shows a careful look at theatrical experiences outside the Rio-São Paulo axis”, added Taciano Soares. “We are creating a theater in our city that has the same technical level of reach as anywhere else in the country, given that the largest cultural metropolis in Brazil, São Paulo, is validating the work of Ateliê 23 on a national level”.

Eric Lima, who shares command of the Amazon company with Taciano Soares, pointed out that in 2023, when the group celebrates 10 years of operation, Ateliê 23 managed to reach many places, in different ways, with the production of “Cabaré Chinelo” and with the songs, which made the Theater stronger.

“The award is yet another answer that we are ‘piercing the bubble’, it means that we have an extremely dense production, it shows that we managed to achieve with our work that is done here, with the people here, and that is what we take to 2024, to continue experimenting with this language”, said the Devil’s interpreter and musical director of the show. “We had a year of rewards, of work that we developed ten years ago, and now in a pioneering place”.

Cast

With 17 artists on stage, the play features Vivian Oliveira, Sarah Margarido, Andira Angeli, Julia Kahane, Thayná Liartes, Fernanda Seixas, Daphne Pompeu, Daniely Peinado, Vanja Poty, Ana Oliveira, Bruna Pollari, Allícia Castro, Taciano Soares and Eric Lima, as well as musicians Yago Reis, Guilherme Bonates and Stivisson Menezes.

The project, in partnership with the Argentine theater company García Sathicq, has support from the Government of Amazonas, through the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy, University of the State of Amazonas (UEA) and the Amazonas State Research Support Foundation ( Fapeam), in addition to the National Arts Foundation (Funarte) and Fondo de Ayudas para las Artes Escénicas Iberoamericanas – IBERESCENA.

Award-winning group

This year, Ateliê 23 won in two categories of the 22nd Cenym National Theater Award, from the Academy of Arts in Theater of Brazil, “Best Company” and “Best Costume Design”, with the show “Cabaré Chinelo”. The play, which was a critical and public success, was also nominated for “Best Cast” in this edition.

At the 17th Amazon Theater Festival, held in October, “Cabaré Chinelo” won three awards: “Best Show”, “Direction” and “Best Costume Design”. The play was also nominated in the categories “Best Actress”, with Vivian Oliveira, “Best Actor” and “Soundtrack”, with Eric Lima.

In 2023, the company also won the award for best national performance at the 8th International Film Festival of Sexual and Gender Diversity of Goiás, with the character Belinho, played by Taciano Soares in the film “A Bela é Poc”, the group’s first short film. .

The main characteristic of Ateliê 23 is working with real stories, the subject of the PhD thesis “Scenic Bionarratives: Devices of Commotion in Works of Ateliê 23”, defended by director Taciano Soares at the Federal University of Bahia.
