Shireen Mahdi is Folha’s new columnist – 09/06/2023 – Market

Economist Shireen Mahdi, 44, is the new columnist for Sheet. A British and Somali national, she is the World Bank’s lead economist for Brazil. Her texts will be published in the online version of the newspaper, every 15 days.

The column will address important topics for growth, inclusion, climate change and economic policy in Brazil. Some texts, according to her, will be authored exclusively by the economist and others made in collaboration with other members of the World Bank.

Mahdi’s most recent text, published this Monday (5), addresses the Tax Reform approved by the Chamber of Deputies —now under analysis by the Senate. With the support of other technicians from the bank, she analyzes how the proposal can impact the reduction of social inequality in the country.

The economist’s texts will replace those of Pablo Acosta, Human Development leader for Brazil at the World Bank, who will assume a position in Washington.

Mahdi has a PhD in economics from the University of Manchester, an MA from the University of London and has over 15 years of professional experience. She joined the World Bank in 2011 and has since worked in technical departments in the Middle East, Africa and East Asia.

Prior to joining the World Bank, she was a technical specialist at the UK Department for International Development and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). In addition to Portuguese, she speaks English, French, Arabic, Italian and Somali.
