‘Sex Education’ Stars Among Nominees for Newcomer Award at Bafta

Aimee Lou Wood and Emma Mackey, actresses from the cast of the Netflix series “Sex Education” Sheila Atim are among the nominees in the Rising Star category at the Bafta Film Awards. The shortlist of five candidates unveiled on Tuesday also includes Naomi Ackie, who played the late music star Whitney Houston in the biopic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody: The Whitney Houston Story,” and “Good Luck, Leo Grande” actor “Daryl McCormack. He is the only male nominated. Mackey and Wood play close friends in Netflix’s dramedy about teenagers trying to figure out their love lives. Wood, who already won a Bafta TV award for Female Performance in a Comedy Program for “Sex Education”, was recognized on Tuesday for her role in the drama “Living”. Mackey was nominated for her portrayal of “Wuthering Heights” novelist Emily Brontë in the biographical drama “Emily.” The Rising Star award is the only category voted on by the public at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Film Awards, which this year will take place on February 19 in London. Past winners include Lashana Lynch, who also stars in “The Wife King,” Tom Hardy, Kristen Stewart and Academy Award winner Daniel Kaluuya.
