The dollar opened slightly higher on Thursday (16) after another day of losses on the eve. The American currency was impacted this week by the interest rate break in the United States promoted by the Fed (Federal Reserve, the American central bank).

The real against the dollar also supported the increase in optimism about the Brazilian economy, reinforced by the improvement in Brazil’s long-term perspective by the risk rating agency S&P.

Brazilian investors are waiting this Thursday for the release of the IBC-Br index, which measures the performance of the Brazilian economy, by the Central Bank. Abroad, inflation data in the euro zone is also on the market’s radar.

At 9:11 am (Brasília time), the spot dollar advanced 0.26%, to R$ 4.8153 in the sale. At B3, at 9:11 am (Brasília time), the first expiring dollar futures contract.

The Brazilian stock exchange closed higher on Thursday (15) also supported by optimistic projections about the economy, although it lost strength with a profit-taking movement and a fall in Petrobras shares. The index closed with gains of 0.12%, at 119,221 points, at the best level since October 2022.

The dollar, on the other hand, deepened its losses and closed down 0.22%, at R$ 4.803, pressured by the pause in American interest rates and by the improvement in the long-term perspective of Brazil by the risk rating agency S&P Global.

In the year, the Brazilian Stock Exchange accumulates an increase of 8.6%, while the American currency had a devaluation of 9%.

Braskem had the biggest high of the day, rising 6.35% amid news of a possible operation to buy control of the petrochemical industry. Shares of Yduqs (5.57%) and Hapvida (3.72%) are next among the biggest gains.

Pressured the Ibovespa, however, the shares of Petrobras. The oil company even started the day on a high, but its shares began to fall after the announcement of a new reduction in gasoline prices at refineries, which, according to economist Alexsandro Nishimura, a partner at Nomos, fueled fears of political interference in the company.

As a result, Petrobras had a drop of 1.18% in its common shares and 2.32% in its preferred shares, removing part of the strength of the Ibovespa.

Short-term interest rates fell again this Thursday, with contracts maturing in January 2024 going from 13.04% to 13.02%. Those for 2025, however, rose from 11.12% to 11.14%, but remain at a low level.

In addition to Petrobras, B3, which fell 3.35% and had the biggest losses of the session, also pressured the Ibovespa in today’s session, being among the most traded shares. The company is going through a moment of correction after registering a strong increase on Wednesday (14).

For Naio Ino, variable income manager at Western Asset, the performance in the trading session reflected “a bit of a hangover” from the day before, a very positive day for the Stock Exchange, with some stocks that rose very strongly on Wednesday, returning part of the gains .

In the United States, the main stock indices closed in the positive. The Dow Jones, S&P 500 and Nasdaq were up 1.26%, 1.22% and 1.15% respectively.

The dollar, on the other hand, returned to a negative performance both in Brazil and abroad. The DXY index, which measures the performance of the American currency against other strong currencies, fell 0.78% on Tuesday.
