Investors in Brazil are echoing the release of the IBC-Br, an indicator of Brazilian economic activity made by the Central Bank, which recorded an increase of 0.63% in June compared to May. Another factor was the release of the Focus bulletin, which projected GDP growth in 2023 and less inflation for 2024. Economist at Guide Investimentos, Rafael Pacheco says that the performance is a reflection of a more negative external scenario, after higher-than-expected inflation data in the United States. The US producer price index rose 0.3% in July, while economists had expected a 0.2% rise.
The above-expected high brings back investors’ fears that the Fed (Federal Reserve, US central bank) opts for a more restrictive monetary policy, keeping interest rates at a high level for longer, says Pacheco.
On the American stock exchanges, the index that brings together Nasdaq technology companies, which are the ones that suffer most from high interest rates, closed down 0.68%. The S&P 500 was down 0.11%, while the Dow Jones recorded gains of 0.30%.
