A new medicine indicated for premature ejaculation approved by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) last year had its maximum price defined for consumers and is already sold in Brazil. According to Farmoquímica, which produces it, it has been sold in the country since February this year and costs around R$55 for a box of six pills.

The drug in question is Prosoy. Authorization of the drug by Anvisa took place in March 2022, but it only started to be sold almost a year later, in February of this year, according to the pharmaceutical company.

According to the drug leaflet, Prosoy is indicated for men aged 18 to 64 years with a history of premature and persistent ejaculation. The user may also experience distress because of the lack of control over the time it takes to ejaculate.

The medicine is composed of dapoxetine, a substance that inhibits serotonin reuptakers, popularly known as the happiness hormone and associated, among others, with mood and sex life. Inhibitors like this are already used in some antidepressants: by blocking the reuptakers, the serotonin level increases in the human body, which can have a positive effect on depression. As a side effect, the use of these antidepressants can delay ejaculation.

In the case of Prosoy, the objective is to act specifically in the control of premature ejaculation through dapoxetine, which increases the level of serotonin in the human body, prolongs the time of sexual arousal and, finally, delays ejaculation.

To act properly, a man should take a 30 mg tablet about 1 to 3 hours before sex. It is not recommended that the pill be used daily, but the maximum daily consumption can be one pill every 24 hours.

It is also possible to double the amount ingested, reaching 60 mg. But this should only be done when the user has consumed the standard dose of 30 mg and has not noticed a sufficient effect of the medicine in delaying ejaculation. In addition, to increase the dosage, it is extremely important that the man has not shown symptoms of fainting or side effects, moderate or severe, when ingesting 30 mg of the drug. This is because increasing the dosage also carries the greatest risk of unwanted reactions.

Some of these rarer and more serious adverse events can be rapid heartbeat, feeling jittery, dizziness and lethargy. The most common side effects are dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, among others.

There are cases where Prosoy should not be recommended at all. For example, there have been no clinical trials attesting to its safety and effectiveness in people over the age of 65 or under the age of 18. Therefore, this public should not consume the drug.

The medicine is also not indicated for women. In addition, the concomitant use of Prosoy with other drugs can cause complications for patients. One of these cases are other serotonin reuptake inhibitors, commonly used to treat depression, and also monoamine oxidase inhibitors, also adopted in cases of psychiatric disorders.
