Argentinian empanadas, American barbecue, passing by a pasta and risotto house. All these options can be found in the same block on Rua Amauri, in Jardim Europa, in the western region of São Paulo, right on the border with neighboring Itaim Bibi.

Famous for its business lunches and the coming and going of executives, the favorite gastronomic corridor of “faria limers” suffered a setback during the pandemic, but has recovered its strength. Last year, with the resumption, the Franco-Italian La Poêle and the Iberian Imma opened there. This Saturday (22), another one arrives, Amauri Grocery Store.

The new store will operate at the same location as Mercearia São Roque, which closed in March last year. With new owners, the establishment will have chef Luiz Vieira at the head of its kitchen, who has worked at Nobu restaurant units and is responsible for creating the menus at the Japanese restaurants Kitchin and Aima.

The menu created for the new bar-restaurant will be boteco-style, with classic snacks, as well as specialties made on the grill. Among the options, duck heart, shrimp crackling, fried corn, croqueta de ham, chicken coxinha and pastel. On the drinks menu, the classic gin and tonic, cosmopolitan, negroni, rabo de galo and caipirinha, in addition to other house creations.

“Many people were orphaned by Mercearia São Roque, and we want to bring these customers back. Show that we have a new house, which is democratic. It will be the happy hour space, to gather friends, have dinner with the girlfriend, have a pre-party warm-up”, says Isabela Progin, one of the partners of the new establishment.

The new development will maintain the traditional façade of the corner house that has existed for at least 40 years. The environment will be divided into two halls and an external parklet. The decoration has bright colors and an internal mural with paintings signed by the artist Carlota Gasparian. The architectural project was developed by Bebeto Lima, Marcelo Nogueira and Marisa Solano.

The block that houses the grocery store and the restaurants Dhomus, La Poêle, Imma, Nice To Meet U Steak House and Empanadas Katita’s is very residential. There, the establishments take on an extension of the houses, as if customers could fraternize on their own balconies and backyards.

“We had been customers of Mercearia São Roque for many years and, one day, sitting there, we saw a property and decided to turn it into a small, very intimate restaurant, for a few people. We wanted to have the same feeling of welcoming friends at home”, says Angélica Alves, chef at La Poêle.

Opposite Mercearia, on Rua Emanuel Kant, the bistro is divided between French and Italian cuisines and has pasta and risotto options. In addition to the chef, the space is also run by Marcio Paschoal, her husband. The two began their gastronomic journey during the pandemic, when they decided to open a digital restaurant specializing in risottos, Riso Bowls. From him came the idea of ​​expanding the business and having a physical space

La Poêle, which means “frying pan” in French, is divided into two areas: a lounge with a bar and an outdoor veranda overlooking the tree-lined Emanuel Kant street. In the decor inspired by the south of France, stone walls, vertical landscaping and a wine cellar.

Among the starters, the highlight is the option of breaded brie with honey and chestnuts (R$ 50). As a main course option is Pasta Al Mare (tomato sauce with seafood: squid, mussels, shrimp and octopus), for R$89. For dessert, a hazelnut cream with ice cream finished with caramelized macadamia (R$36).

Wall to wall with La Pôele is Dhomus, a Mediterranean restaurant led by chef Carlos Vesentini. On the menu, the couvert with warm, home-made brioche bread stands out. Among the options to share are the scallops au gratin, with paprika and Sicilian lemon (R$ 78). The panna cotta with raspberries (R$35) can be a good dessert option.

The establishment has three environments divided into an internal, external and rooftop lounge. The beachy look of the decoration is due to the stone walls, the suspended chandeliers and the bar on the veranda that resembles a kiosk with a refined air. On the top floor is the Dhomus Terrace, open on Fridays and Saturdays. With 35 seats, the space with tables and parasols overlooks the Gardens.

“The idea for the restaurant was born out of a great desire of mine to bring a house with the identity and energy of Mykonos —an island in super-traveled Greece— to São Paulo”, says the creator of the space, Luiz Felipe Bordon.
