Best Brazilian wines cost between R$67 and R$165 – 07/20/2023 – Food

Brazilian wines and sparkling wines broke the record for awards at the International Wine and Spirits Competition, one of the most important competitions of its kind in the world. In this year’s edition, national labels received five silver and 42 bronze medals — 47 in total. That’s 14 more medals than in 2022, when the country won 33 recognitions.

Among those awarded the silver medal, two labels come from Vinícola Campestre, in Vacária (RS), and two others from Vitivinícola Jolimont, in Canela (RS). A label from Vinícola Aurora also took silver in the contest. Contrary to what many might imagine, none of them have exorbitant prices: they are between R$67 and R$165 —see the list below.

The International Wine and Spirits Competition takes place annually in London, since 1969. A jury composed of buyers, Masters of Wine and Masters Sommeliers (the highest distinction among professionals in the sector) receives labels from producers from all over the world and submits them to a blind tasting. In order for everyone to be evaluated fairly —and also so as not to exhaust the judges’ taste buds — only 65 samples are analyzed per day.

Silver Medal – 92 points

• Zanotto Malbec 2022 (Campestre Winery) | BRL 73.90
  Ripe black fruit aromas such as plum, blackberry and black cherry, a sweet touch of candied fruit and grape jelly, it also has a delicate minty aroma and a touch of spice such as cloves. On the palate it is quite fruity, with medium body and acidity, soft and at the same time expressive tannins, good persistence and juicy. It goes well with roast beef, lamb or pork, dishes based on mushrooms or peppers, pasta with heavy sauces and more powerful cheeses.

Silver Medal – 91 points

• Gran Reserva Touriga Nacional (Aurora Wine Cooperative) | BRL 89.90
  It presents aromas of black fruits, such as blackberry, raspberry, blueberry and plum, in addition to notes of dark chocolate and mint. On the palate, it is balanced and full-bodied, with firm and pleasant tannins. It goes well with meat and typical dishes, such as barbecue, feijoada and game meat.

Silver Medal – 90 points

• Merlot Reserva 2021 (Jolimont Winery) | BRL 99
  On the nose, it is Intense, with notes of black fruits such as plum, blackberry and raspberry, a touch of fine herbs, tobacco and coffee. On the palate, it has balanced acidity, persistent tannins, soft, fruity, good volume in the mouth, with a persistent aftertaste reminiscent of tobacco.

• Querências Marselan 2020 (Jolimont Winery) | BRL 165
  On the nose, it is intense and complex, with tertiary notes reminiscent of dark chocolate, tobacco and coffee, as well as aromas of black fruits and fruit in syrup such as plum, blackberry and blackcurrant liqueur. On the palate, it is soft and sumptuous, with good structure, balanced acidity, persistent tannins, good volume in the mouth and aftertaste reminiscent of chocolate.

• Zanotto Sauvignon Blanc 2022 (Country Winery) | BRL 66.90
  Its aromas are reminiscent of citrus fruits such as guava and passion fruit, in addition to mineral notes that express complexity and freshness. Light-bodied, with medium/high acidity that brings joviality and refreshment to the palate, in addition to expressing all its fruity character in the mouth. Excellent with fresh salads, light cheeses, fish and other seafood, vegetable dishes and creamy sauces, in addition to combining very well with snacks.

Last year, recognition for Brazilian wines abroad grew by 70%, making 2022 the best season in the country in international competitions: there were 704 awards out of 23 awards. So far this year, Brazilian producers have won 403 medals in 15 contests.

“This is a celebration for everyone, which raises the image of Brazil, a New World country that evolved very quickly in the production of wines and sparkling wines with international quality”, says oenologist André Gasperin, president of the Associação Braileira de Enologia. In 2022, the entity sent representatives to the jury of 17 of the 23 contests in which Brazil competed.
