Security: EU demands response from Meta on combating abuse – 12/01/2023 – Tech

European Union regulatory bodies reported this Friday (1st) that Meta has until December 22nd to send more details about measures taken to combat child sexual abuse material on Instagram.
If it doesn’t respond, the company risks a formal investigation under the EU’s new online content rules.
In October, the European Commission sent a first request for information on measures taken to combat the spread of terrorist and violent content, and a second, in November, on measures to protect minors.
“Information is also requested about Instagram’s recommendation system and the amplification of potentially harmful content,” the European Commission said in a statement about its latest consultation.
The request for information was made under the DSA (EU Digital Services Act), new technology rules that require big tech companies to do more to police illegal and harmful content on their platforms.
Failure to comply with such requests may lead to a formal investigation and even fines.
TikTok, owned by Chinese conglomerate ByteDance, and Elon Musk’s X, also received similar requests for information.
