Santos Dumont: Governor discussed shared management – 06/12/2023 – Market

The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro (PL), said this Monday (12) that he is studying with the Federal Executive the creation of a shared management for the Santos Dumont airport.

The idea is that the capital of Rio de Janeiro also participates in this management. The statement by the head of the RJ Executive was given after a meeting with President Lula (PT).

The search for a solution to the case is due to the current dispute between Santos Dumont and Galeão, another Rio airport. The objective is to avoid predatory competition between the two devices.

According to Castro, shared management would be formalized through a Specific Purpose Society (SPE), which could also hire Chamgi, the company that manages Galeão, to have flow control over the two airports.

“There were some proposals, such as the state, Union and municipality to manage Santos Dumont. And so we can make this transition. I had already talked about this idea with Minister Márcio França (Ports and Airports). And Mayor Eduardo Paes and the ministers are coming here this week,” he said.

“And it could be, who knows, an SPE. And the state and municipality would do this negotiation with Changi, I could hire it. So, finding the easiest business model that the state and municipality would be able to arrange that.”

And he continued: “We talked about the issue of Galeão and Santos Dumont. Minister Rui Costa [Casa Civil] is very worried. I spoke my impressions: that the whole issue was not being Changi or being Infraero. But it was having a shared management of the two equipment. We learned that Rio is a multi-airport city and state,” he said.

Santos Dumont is currently managed by Infraero, a public company linked to the federal government, and is one of the most profitable equipment in the country. He spoke about a legal solution to the case.
