Salles wants to hear Suzano president about MST – 06/20/2023 – Panel SA

In the midst of a war between government supporters and the opposition, the rapporteur for the CPI of the MST (Movement of Landless Rural Workers) in the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Salles (PL-SP), filed this Tuesday (20) a request to convene the president of the Suzano, businessman Walter Schalka.

Salles, who was Minister of the Environment in the Jair Bolsonaro government, defended the interests of agribusiness and, during his administration, attacked the MST.

At the CPI, the current deputy wants Schalka to present a report on the invasion that took place on four farms belonging to the pulp company.

Three farms, invaded in February, are located in the municipalities of Teixeira de Freitas, Mucuri and Caravelas, in the extreme south of Bahia. The fourth, invaded in April, is in Aracruz (ES).

The deputy states that one of the MST’s allegations was that the lands were unproductive and, therefore, demanded expropriation for agrarian reform.

“It turns out that, contrary to what the MST claimed, all farms are productive and provide raw material for the development of the company’s activities, which, in turn, employs thousands of people directly and indirectly, in addition to promoting affirmative action for employees and preservation of the environment”, says Salles.

The movement of the landless generated uneasiness in the government, which had to intervene to prevent a crisis from erupting in the Planalto Palace, deepening the attrition with agribusiness.

At the time, Suzano claimed that properties in Bahia were damaged by members of the movement.

In recent weeks, other committee deputies have also suggested calling Suzano directors to comment on the invasions. The requests have not yet been voted on.

Suzano has not yet manifested itself.
