The head of Russia’s space agency said the country is evaluating with China the possibility of installing a nuclear power plant on the Moon by 2035.

“We are seriously considering this project,” said Yury Borisov, director general of Roscosmos, during a lecture this Tuesday (5) to students, according to the Interfax news service.

He stated that the plant would need to be built by robots.

In 2021, Russia and China presented a plan to build a scientific station on the satellite by the end of 2035.

According to a report from the Tass news service, the project includes the use of rovers for research, a jumping robot and several smart minirovers designed to explore the lunar surface.

Borisov also said that Russia opposes the use of nuclear weapons in space, reinforcing the position of Vladimir Putin, who previously denied US allegations about the Kremlin’s possible plans to have this type of weapon.

“It is clear that space must be free of nuclear weapons,” Borisov said, according to Interfax.
