Currently, according to the Ministry of Education, there are 399 institutions that adopt the alternation pedagogy in Brazil, 8 of which are in quilombola territories, 19 on indigenous lands, 38 in agrarian reform settlements and 334 in rural community areas. In alternation pedagogy, students spend a week at school, full time, and another at home, reproducing in the field what they learned at school. And the classes already bring a return to the community. In 2011, the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro was devastated by rain in one of the greatest climate tragedies in the country’s history. Almost 4 thousand people died. At the time, the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company (Emater) contacted the group of young people that had formed that year, so that they could help farmers with their crops, diagnosing losses. To this day, the project helps farmers in the region, who are mostly parents and students, through the implementation of agroforestry systems on properties, that is, a method that combines plants of different varieties in the same area, in cooperation, imitating nature .
