After postponing the opening parade of Oktoberfest, Blumenau City Hall decided to preventively suspend the event between the 6th and 10th of October.

The reason is the risk of flooding on the Itajaí-açu river, which is well above normal due to the heavy rains that hit the entire Itajaí Valley. According to Mayor Mário Hildebrandt (Podemos), the party, which would end on October 22nd, will be extended to the 29th.

“This week’s rain was different from the last few in Blumenau. The river rose very quickly. It rained 90 millimeters in a short space of time. And the forecast for the next few days is for a lot of rain,” said the mayor.

The official opening of the beer event took place on Wednesday (4) without the traditional parade on November 15th Street, in the historic center of the city. The heavy rains also affected air traffic in the city, with the cancellation in recent days of some flights that would arrive in Navegantes, the airport that serves Blumenau.

At night, at Parque Vila Germânica, headquarters of the party, the audience on the first day was around 13.6 thousand people, well below the 29 thousand at the opening of 2022.

This Thursday (5), the news of a further postponement of the parade came early. At the end of the afternoon, the announcement of the decision to suspend Oktoberfest until the 10th arrived — but the day’s program continued to be maintained.

“At this moment, we need to be responsible,” said the mayor, considering the economic importance of the event, but also concerned about the risk of landslides in some areas of the city. Blumenau’s Oktoberfest is the second largest of its kind, behind only the original festival in Munich. This year, the 38th edition of the event is being celebrated.

The initial forecast is for the program to resume its routine next Wednesday (11), the day before the holiday, with the opening parade.
