RespiroAR program help mother and daughter regain quality of life

A national and international reference, the RespiroAR program has changed the history of more than 35,000 lives through sport

The RespiroAR program, coordinated by the State Secretariat for Sports and Leisure (Sedel), has been essential for many Amazonians who face health problems and physical limitations. The initiative of the Government of Amazonas has changed the lives of Ilma Barcelar, 68 years old, and her daughter Eliandra Barcelar, 46 years old, who share stories of overcoming challenges.

Ilma Barcelar, suffered from arthrosis, osteoporosis and diabetes, facing difficulties in performing basic day-to-day activities. Pain and constant tiredness limited her quality of life, but everything changed after about a year of being monitored by the program’s physiotherapy and physical education professionals, at the Vila Olímpica unit in Manaus.

“I felt too tired and in pain to do the housework, but everything changed after being monitored at RespiroAR, where I went through physiotherapy and then on to exercise. I am very grateful to Governor Wilson Lima for helping us, to God and to all the people who are by my side”,

shared the housewife, Ilma Barcelar.

Eliandra Barcelar, daughter of Ilma, faced an even more challenging path. In 2009, she suffered a stroke and has undergone five surgeries since then, with serious sequelae. Chronic pain and movement limitations were compounded during the Covid-19 pandemic, leading her to struggle with depression as well.

In 2022, Eliandra received psychological assistance, assistance that proved to be essential for her to be able to resume her physiotherapy activities and regain her quality of life.

“I want to thank the government for giving us this opportunity. Thank you very much”,

expressed Eliandra.

“RespiroR, in addition to providing specialized treatments, has promoted social inclusion, improved quality of life and the physical and mental well-being of the population. The success of the program in the lives of Ilma and Eliandra and the more than 35,000 people benefited is concrete proof of the commitment of the Government of Amazonas to taking care of health through sport”, highlighted Jorge Oliveira, secretary of Sedel.
