Research shows that 31% of Brazilians need to supplement their income

A survey carried out by the Sustainable Cities Institute in partnership with Intelligence in Research and Strategic Consulting (Ipec) showed that 31% of Brazilians needed to do some extra activity to supplement their income this year. In 2022, this percentage was 45%.

The National Survey on Inequalities also revealed that 57% of people have the feeling that there has been an increase in the number of people in situations of hunger and poverty in the city where they live; in 2022, the index was 75%.

In all, 2,000 people aged 16 or over were interviewed in 127 municipalities.

According to the data, 71% fully or partially agree that climate change and extreme events, such as rain, intense heat or cold, prolonged drought, equally affect all people of any color or social class. Of those interviewed, 68% believe that black and white people are treated differently in environments. The most cited spaces in which there is a situation of prejudice are shopping malls and commercial establishments, schools and universities.

When asked about having suffered harassment, 40% of the women responded positively and that it occurred in streets and public spaces, public transport, work environment, bars and nightclubs, private transport and family environment. Almost half of the population declares that they have suffered or seen someone suffer prejudice due to their sexual orientation or gender identity, a proportion that has dropped 11 percentage points compared to 2022.

The survey data were presented at the launch of the National Pact to Combat Inequalities this Wednesday, in Brasília. The pact is an initiative of social organizations, associations of municipalities, trade union centrals, class entities, government instances of the Executive and Legislative, federal, state and municipal, and the Judiciary.

“The objective of the movement is to transform the fight against inequalities into a national priority and promote a set of actions that contribute to the construction of a fairer and more inclusive society. The first initiatives include the launch of the Brazilian Observatory of Inequalities, a diagnosis based on 42 indicators from 12 thematic areas, and the Parliamentary Front to Combat Inequalities”,
