Removal of wood and irregular constructions are some of the problems faced by the team at the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park. The site is a conservation unit, important for maintaining the biome’s biodiversity. Report shows challenges to monitor deforestation in the Cerrado of Goiás Globo Rural followed the challenges of employees of the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, in Goiás, to monitor actions of land grabbers and deforestation in the region. The site is a conservation unit, sheltered by Cerrado vegetation – the second largest biome in Brazil –, which has been suffering from deforestation. Satellite images from the European Space Agency, for example, show that deforestation in the biome exceeded 118,000 hectares in May this year, a 35% increase over the same month in 2022. This year alone, almost 100 square kilometers of Cerrado were felled in the state of Goiás, most of which occurred in Chapada dos Veadeiros. Inspection Our team monitored the work of the director of the national park and tourismologist Luís Neves. He said that, since the beginning of the year, his team has been investigating a complaint of deforestation on the banks of the flowing river. When walking with him through the park, the reporter came across, for example, a new road, recently opened, without authorization from the authorities. In addition, he found wood that was removed from the biome and irregular construction of houses. On the other hand, communities that live in the region adopt practices that preserve the place. This is the case of the Kalunga People, who have been in the territory for over 340 years. Within their land, deforestation is not allowed. They usually, for example, cultivate an area for 5 or 6 years, and then let the forest regenerate. To open a new planting area, they need authorization from Ibama (Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources). Check out the full report in the video above.
