The world belongs to trams – at least in the 1st quarter

For the first time in history, the best-selling car in the world is electric: the Tesla Model Y surpassed sales of Toyota’s Corolla in the first quarter, and was the model with the most deliveries in the period.

In numbers: the most popular model of Elon Musk’s automaker sold 267.2 thousand units from January to March, an increase of 69% compared to the same period last year.

• Corolla ended the quarter with 256.4 thousand sales, with emphasis on the drops of 29% in China and 10% in the USA – the two markets in which the Model Y grew the most.

• Considering the other models, however, the Japanese automaker maintains the lead: of the five most sold, four (Corolla, Hilux, RAV4, Camry) are theirs.

Which explains: The surge in Model Y sales was driven by a strategic decision by Tesla, which lowered the prices of its units at the beginning of the year, mainly in the US and China – discounts reached 15%.

• The objective was to revive demand for vehicles, after a decline in the last quarter of 2022.

• For Americans, the idea was to place vehicles within the limit of US$ 55 thousand (R$ 275 thousand), so that consumers were entitled to a credit of up to US$ 7,500 (R$ 37 thousand) in taxes valid for cars electrical.

• Today, the prices available on the automaker’s website are US$ 40,240 (R$ 201.6 thousand) for the Model 3, US$ 50,490 (R$ 253 thousand) for the Model Y and US$ 88,490 (R$ 443.4 mil) for the Model S.

Last Thursday (25), Elon Musk and Jim Farley, the CEO of Ford, announced via Twitter an agreement to make available 12 thousand Tesla fast charging stations for the American rival.

The news comes after an agreement between the automaker and the US government to enable part of its chargers (which have a specific input) for other manufacturers, in exchange for subsidies.

HDI buys rival and creates vice-leader of the sector

HDI Seguros, through its parent company Talanx Group, announced on Saturday (27) the purchase of Liberty Seguros operations in Latin America for 1.3 billion euros (almost R$ 7 billion).

• In addition to Brazil, Liberty also operates in the region in Chile, Colombia and Ecuador.

• The transaction still depends on the endorsement of Cade (antitrust body) and Susep (regulator of the insurance industry). Until then, the companies will continue to operate independently.

In numbers: with the purchase, HDI anabolizes in about 45% its business in the region and becomes the second largest insurer in the Brazilian market (excluding life and pension), based on written premiums in 2022.

• Also considering the acquisition of the retail lines of Sompo Seguros, made in June 2022, the premium for the “turbinated” HDI reaches BRL 13.3 billion.

• It is second only to Porto (BRL 22.5 billion last year).

The two companies are practically the same size. The combined business reaches 6 million customers (3 million from HDI and 3 million from Liberty) and 48 thousand brokers (25 thousand from Liberty and 25 thousand from HDI).

• The brands must remain separate even after the purchase has been confirmed.

With an eye on the fall of the Selic

The expectation in the market for the beginning of the cycle of low interest rates in the country has already begun to appear on the Stock Exchange and in fixed income assets.

A Sheet spoke with analysts to find out where the best opportunities are in this scenario.

What explains: although there are divisions among analysts about when the Selic will effectively fall, the scenario has eased in recent weeks, with inflation data below expectations and the approval of the fiscal framework in the Chamber.

In variable income, the expectation is on consumer actions linked to the domestic economy and small caps. These companies were the ones that suffered the most with the increase in interest rates and now they should benefit from the reversal of the movement.

• Among the companies linked to consumption, there are sectors such as retail, real estate and capital goods.

• Small caps are those with a lower market value than large caps on the Exchange. With the Selic drop in sight, the index of these companies rises 14% in the year, while the Ibovespa rises 6%.

• The recommendation highlights medium-term bonds, maturing around 2026.

• Post-fixed bonds, which bet on an increase in interest rates ahead, lose part of their attractiveness.

Last days for the IR

If you are reading this newsletter on Monday, there are just over 48 hours left to deliver your income tax return – the deadline ends on Wednesday (31), at 23:59.

Are you in doubt if you need to declare? You have to settle accounts with the lion who received taxable income in more than BRL 28,559.70 in 2022. There are still other rules, about income, capital gains, stock exchange operations… See them all here.
