Pulitzer winner sues Meta for use of AI works – 09/13/2023 – Tech

A group of writers including 2001 Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon filed a lawsuit against Meta in San Francisco federal court on Tuesday, accusing the company of improperly using their works to train intelligence software. Artificial Llama.

Chabon, David Henry Hwang —Tony-winning playwright— and authors Matthew Klam, Rachel Louise Snyder and Ayelet Waldman claim in the lawsuit that big tech taught the language model to respond to commands with data sets that included pirated versions of their works .

The same writers filed a similar class action lawsuit on Friday (8) against OpenAI, owner of ChatGPT. The authors stated in the case of OpenAI that works such as books and plays are particularly valuable for AI language training as the “best examples of high-quality, extensive writing.”

A Meta spokesperson declined to comment on the new lawsuit. An attorney for the writers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Meta and OpenAI were also sued for copyright infringement in July by another group of writers that includes comedian Sarah Silverman. The cases join a growing list of copyright cases against AI companies.

Meta released the list of databases used to train the first version of the Llama model, which was launched in February — but did not disclose those for the most recent version, Llama 2.

The launch of Llama 2 was seen as a potential game-changer in the nascent market for generative AI software, threatening the early dominance of companies like OpenAI and Google, which charge for use of their models.
