Treatments by the therapeutic resource exceed the mark of 10,000 procedures per month at the health unit
Manaus (AM) – Acupuncture, an ancient therapy originating in China, has been increasingly used in the treatment of physical and emotional illnesses in the state of Amazonas. Located in the Cachoeirinha neighborhood, in the South Zone of Manaus, the Policlínica Codajás, of the State Department of Health (SES-AM), has been offering health care with acupuncture for patients of the Unified Health System (SUS) for about a year.
Acupuncture consists of stimulating specific body points to treat both the symptoms and the causes of an illness. According to the physiotherapist at Policlínica Codajás, Ana Cristina, the treatment has no contraindications and can be performed on patients of all ages, including children, adults and the elderly.
“It is a treatment that takes care not only of the physical part, but also the emotional part and we take care not only of the symptoms, but of the causes. There are several resources that we use here. The number of diseases to be treated with acupuncture is infinite, treating different diseases”,
said the physiotherapist.
In April, the unit performed more than 10 thousand procedures in 1,124 patients. The physiotherapist points out that acupuncture can be used to treat a wide variety of illnesses, including anxiety, depression, stress, migraines, sinusitis, asthma, arthritis, back pain and bruxism, among others. In addition, she points out that the therapy addresses not only the physical part, but also the emotional part of the patients, treating not only the symptoms, but also the causes of the diseases.
The general director of Policlínica Codajás, Ráiner Figueiredo, highlights the importance of the service for public health, since many people did not have access to acupuncture before its implementation in the unit.
“The implementation of this service is a milestone in the history of public health in our state, where we are delivering better quality health to our users. Before they could only do this service privately, today they are being served via the regulation system”,
explained the director.
Since it was introduced a year ago at Policlínica Codajás, the acupuncture service has complemented other activities carried out by physiotherapists in the gym. Before starting treatment, patients undergo a pre-assessment to assess physical issues and identify the International Classification of Disease (ICD) corresponding to their condition.
Results
For many patients, the positive results of acupuncture treatment are evident, as is the case with housewife Elizabete Silva, who claims to have experienced a great improvement in both her physical and emotional health.
“This treatment is all good, both psychologically and physically. Before, I felt a lot of pain and the treatments with cupping, acupuncture, hot stones are excellent. In my physique I feel a big improvement, because when I got here I didn’t walk well, I got really bad. In my emotional state, I arrived crying, nervous with an anxiety attack, I didn’t sleep well and now I can enjoy my sleep”,
stated.
Usually, the treatment consists of about 10 sessions and can include a variety of stimulation techniques, such as cupping, needles, manual stimulation, auriculotherapy and others.
