The political and ideological rigging of regional councils and the Federal Council of Medicine (CFM) has made it difficult to register complaints against doctors who adopt unethical behavior.

Café da Manhã found records of ill-treatment and neglect of patients for political reasons, in addition to reports of disqualification of science. Physicians heard complain about the lack of support from medical councils, which should oversee and regulate the sector, and accuse these institutions of endorsing guidelines that clash with the category’s codes of ethics.

The radicalization of doctors is a topic that has gained strength in debates on bioethics in Brazil, especially with the pandemic, when the lab coat and politics became evident. Among the notorious cases of unethical behavior endorsed by the CFM is the guideline that allowed the use of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of Covid-19, despite scientific evidence showing the ineffectiveness of drugs against the disease. Doctors and bioethicists heard by the report also point to corporatist support for hostile conduct towards patients.

The CFM states that physicians are instructed to express respect for patients in all circumstances. And that, in the case of elective care, doctor and patient have the right to choose not to establish a bond. In this case, according to the Council, the professional must maintain the patient’s care until he finds another doctor to accompany him.
