The Ministry of Finance announced this Monday (27) the return of fuel taxation as of Wednesday (1st). The government is still going to detail what the readjustment percentage will be, but it has already said that fossil fuels, such as gasoline, will have a higher rate. Taxation will be lower for biofuels, such as ethanol.
The objective is to resume collection, with revenue of almost R$ 29 billion this year, a goal that had been announced by Minister Fernando Haddad.
Fuel exemption had been adopted in the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), in the midst of last year’s elections, and maintained in the first two months of the management of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
The debate on the return of taxation provoked a tug of war in the government and between sectors of the PT. Members of Haddad’s team had already defended the end of the exemption, citing the tax impact of the measure. On the other hand, important names in the party, such as the president of the party, Gleisi Hoffmann, wanted the maintenance of lower prices.
This Tuesday’s Breakfast (28) explains what is at stake in the decision on fuel taxes. Reporters Idiana Tomazelli and Julia Chaib, from Brasília, discuss how the internal dispute over exemption impacts the government.
