Plastic surgery to have a ‘Barbie nose’ became a minority – 07/19/2023 – Health

In the 1970s and 1980s, plastic surgery offices received many women who dreamed of a small, thin, delicate and upturned nose. At the time, it was the most sought-after style.

The trend, which became known as “Barbie Nose” (“Barbie’s nose”), as it resembles Barbie’s nose, emerged in Turkey and became popular in the United States, Europe, South Korea and Brazil.

Nowadays, according to experts interviewed by the report, the reality is different. At least in Brazil, the search for a nose like Barbie still exists, but it is a minority. Patients who opt for cosmetic rhinoplasty prefer a beautiful and natural result.

“The Barbie Nose would be the extreme. What I hear most here is ‘I don’t want a Barbie nose, I don’t want a nose that looks like plastic surgery.’ exaggerations”, says the plastic surgeon specialist in rhinoplasty Rodrigo Mangaravite, holder of the SBCP (Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery) and active member of the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery).

The small, upturned nose is not for everyone. “It is important for the surgeon to be aware of this. When I evaluate the patient, I do a study of the face. If I see that it will be disproportionate, I do not indicate it. The surgeon has to have common sense and avoid saying yes to everything the patient wants. He needs to explain how the face will look with such a radical change. In the patient who has a thinner and more delicate face, perhaps this type of nose will be more beautiful.”

The profile of the population seeking rhinoplasty wants a normal nose, without deformities and harmonious with the face. It is the person who, for some reason, feels outside the norm, according to specialist in aesthetic and functional rhinoplasty Carlos Inácio Coelho de Almeida, Regent of the Rhinology Chapter of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery.

“The nose is a cartilaginous bony structure. We have a range of sophisticated rhinoplasty techniques, which have evolved and allow performing the nose with two basic premises: respect for anatomy and respect for function”, explains Almeida.

“I take into account the patient’s desire, the technical possibilities and the harmony of the new nasal contour. There are supporting resources in the preoperative analysis. I look at the functional aspect and the nose that she originally has. Then, I do a photographic study on the computer and I work the images according to the patient’s information. I show that exaggerations will not look good on her and I put the profile that I think will look good. I try to meet the person’s dreams, within the technical parameters”, reinforces Almeida.

There is also the health aspect. A nose that is too small and upturned can interfere with breathing.

“To reduce the nose, you need to remove cartilage. When you remove a lot of cartilage, it disrupts, weakens the structure of the nose, causes obstruction and impairs breathing. Therefore, it is essential to choose a surgeon with experience in rhinoplasty. The technique is being performed even by those who he is not a doctor”, says Mangaravite.

“Rhinoplasty is difficult. There are details. We deal with millimeters. It is a surgery that can cause functional and aesthetic problems. A small error will be visible. The nose is very exposed and a millimeter changes the shape of the person’s face “, concludes Rodrigo Mangaravite.

Look for a qualified member of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery, with training that allows for the sophisticated and technical analysis that a rhinoplasty deserves. This is the advice of physician Carlos Inácio Coelho de Almeida.

The annual global survey of aesthetic and cosmetic procedures by the International Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery shows that the US performed the most procedures worldwide (24.1% of the total), followed by Brazil (8.9%) and Japan ( 5.7%). The five most popular are liposuction, breast augmentation, eyelid surgery, rhinoplasty and tummy tuck. Data are from 2021-latest edition of the study.

Rhinoplasty

According to the SBCP, rhinoplasty is a surgery performed on the nose. It has aesthetic and functional functions, that is, it can improve the appearance and proportion of the nose in terms of its functionality, and correct breathing difficulties caused by abnormalities in the structure

Surgery is most indicated when:

• the size of the nose is disproportionate to other facial structures
• the bridge of the nose is too wide or thin
• the person does not like the profile of your nose
• the tip of the nose is too large, drooping or upturned
• there is nasal asymmetry and deviation
• breathing is very compromised, causing difficulty sleeping or doing physical activities
