Party linked to Universal wants Campos Neto as candidate – 06/22/2023 – Panel SA

The Republicans, a party linked to the bishops of the Universal Church, is considering inviting the president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, to join the party.
The idea is to launch it to the Senate or, more daring plan, to the Presidency of the Republic.
The party executive says she “doesn’t know about the matter”. But several members told the column, on condition of anonymity, that they had already discussed the matter and were only waiting for a first reduction in the Selic —the basic interest rate— for a formal invitation to be made by an economist friend of Campos Neto who had extensive dialogue with to the Republicans.
For these parliamentarians, Campos Neto is the representative of the economic liberalism defended by the party.
There are, however, concerns. One is the development of monetary policy. Apparently, Campos Neto is not sensitive to political interference in the definition of interest rates, something that could kill the start of a possible candidacy.
Another snag is Campos Neto’s friendship with former Economy Minister Paulo Guedes.
Also according to reports, Guedes’ relationship with the party’s president, Marcos Pereira, was not the best in the Jair Bolsonaro administration. And, in the assessment of these interlocutors, it would be difficult to imagine Guedes outside of a Campos Neto campaign.
When consulted, the president of the BC did not respond until the publication of this report.
