The governor of Pará, Helder Barbalho (MDB), defended legislation that creates a kind of green seal for mining in the country.

His idea is to promote the traceability of mineral production, one of the activities that most generate revenue for Pará. With this certification of controlled origin, it would be possible for the sector to finance the low-carbon economy, helping to preserve forest reserves.

The proposal was presented during the opening of Exposibram 2023, the largest mining event in the country, this Monday (28). Barbalho did not make it clear whether any lawmaker from the state in Congress will file a bill.

“The mining agenda needs to go beyond exploration. It is necessary to advance with ore traceability”, said the governor.

For him, traceability should be implemented through a law to combat illegal activities in the sector.

“It is fundamental that we can track all and any mining activity in Brazil, so that we can be absolutely sure that the exploited product comes from areas that are legally exploited, with an environmental license.”

The governor has been defending an environmental agenda in the wake of COP30, an event to be held in Belém.
