“Opera do Malandro” arrives at Teatro Amazonas, with samba and Bossa Nova

Manaus (AM) — Songs in the rhythm of samba and Bossa Nova make up the musical repertoire of the show “Ópera do Malandro”, which premieres in Manaus, at Teatro Amazonas, in the middle of carnival. The production, by Casa de Artes Trilhares, combines an engaging plot with a soundtrack that is pure poetry, an unmissable program for lovers of Chico Buarque, author of the work. The show will be presented in two sessions, on the 17th, at 8pm, and February 18th, at 7pm, and tickets are now on sale.
The plot, set in Rio de Janeiro in the 40s, is marked by songs such as “Homenagem ao Malandro”, which draws a parallel between the trickery of Lapa with that which is still present today, in the middle and upper classes.

says part of the song.
“Each melody plays a fundamental role in the production, transporting spectators to the streets of Rio de Janeiro, in the 1940s. The production promises an unforgettable theatrical experience”, details the play’s director, Dávilla Holanda. According to her, the Amazonian version of “Opera do Malandro” involves more than 40 people on and off the stage.
The director of Casa Trilhares, Rafaela Guimarães, explains that the songs are accompanied by dances that provide the public with a complete spectacle.
“Despite being a social critique in its essence, ‘Opera do Malandro’ is a musical comedy that entertains, mainly, through the catchy songs and brings a show that leaves nothing to be desired when compared to American Broadway musicals”,
states.
For the Secretary of Culture and Creative Economy, Marcos Apolo Muniz, showing the show is an excellent opportunity, especially for new generations to get to know an important Brazilian musical.
“The work is a classic of Brazilian dramaturgy and, with this production, it can be known by younger people, who hadn’t even been born yet when it was successful. In addition, it is part of the Amazonas Theater’s resumption of shows, after important maintenance and restoration works”,
says the secretary.
The show is also filled with songs such as “Las Muchachas de Copacabana”, “Desafio do Malandro”, “Pedaço de Mim”, “Tema de Geni” – which became a true LGBTQIAPN+ anthem –, “O Meu Amor”, and the “Tango do Covil”. The soundtrack earned Buarque the Choral Award for Best Original Music, Edition and Special Jury Prize at the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.
“Ópera do Malandro” premiered in 1978 and, since then, has become one of the most famous Brazilian musicals. In this new production, 100% conducted by local artists, Casa de Artes Trilhares seeks to revive the work, providing a unique interpretation, but with the essence exuding the genius of Chico Buarque.
