One of Germany’s main artistic spaces, the Pergamon Museum, which houses historical works such as the Ishtar Gate, which adorned the entrance to the ancient city of Babylon, will remain closed for 14 years for structural work.
According to an official statement from the institution, the works, scheduled to begin on October 24th, aim to repair damage that dates back to the period of the Second World War, when the Museum suffered shocks that still compromise the conservation of the works of art and do not were resolved by previous reforms.
The idea is that at least one of the wings of the museum will reopen to the public four years from now, but the entire space will only be able to be visited again in 2037. According to the institution, the works should cost 1.2 million euros .
Located on Museum Island, Pergamon is the largest space dedicated to art in the German capital. During the period in which it remains closed, it will still be possible to visit other places, such as the Old Museum, the New Museum, the Old National Gallery, the Bode Museum and the James-Simon Gallery.
