Octavio Frias de Oliveira Award opens registration – 05/03/2023 – Health

As of this Monday (6th), registration is open for the 14th edition of the Octavio Frias de Oliveira Award. The award seeks to stimulate the production of knowledge about cancer in Brazil.

Since the first edition, researches such as those that led to the identification of a mutation responsible for 12% of cases of Wilms’ tumor and the indication of saliva proteins that can help assess the evolution of oral cancer have been awarded.

The award has two categories: Research in Oncology and Technological Innovation in Oncology.

The first is reserved for research that generates knowledge about cancer and its possible forms of treatment.

Original works published in scientific journals in 2022 and 2023 whose author or main author works in a national research and/or teaching institution may be entered in this category.

Last year, the award in this division went to scientist Laura Sichero, who coordinates the Molecular Biology Laboratory at the Center for Translational Research in Oncology at Icesp. She and her team evaluated two variants of HPV-18 and managed to better understand what makes one of the strains have greater oncogenic potential —that is, increase the chance of cancer— than the other.

The second category is aimed at original works published in scientific journals or patents filed from 2021 to 2023 that present a potential innovative product or process for the diagnosis of cancer or its treatment. Also here, the author/inventor needs to work in a research and/or teaching institution in the country.

In 2022, the laureate in this category was Jean Felipe Lestingi. The ICESP urologist was chosen for the research he led on the importance of more extensive removal of pelvic lymph nodes in operations for severe prostate cancer.

In addition to the research, an Outstanding Personality in the area of ​​oncology will be awarded.

Doctor and writer Drauzio Varella, columnist for Sheet, and pediatric oncologist Sérgio Petrilli, founder of Graacc (Support Group for Adolescents and Children with Cancer), are among those honored in previous editions. Last year, the winner was Miguel Srougi, a reference in urology in Brazil.

The choice of winners is made by a commission made up of scientists and members of society committed to the field of oncology. The winners in the three categories will receive R$ 20,000 each and a certificate.

The awards will take place on August 11, at a time and place that will be announced later.
