Employees of the state-owned NAV Brasil, which handles air control services in the country, approved a strike starting next Monday (9). The strike could affect 23 airports, including Guarulhos, Viracopos and Santos Dumont.
The strike was approved this Tuesday (3) by 64.5% of the 1,105 workers present at a virtual meeting. NAV Brasil has 1,698 employees and conducts 38% of landings and takeoffs in the country, according to the state-owned company’s official website.
The category, represented by the National Union of Flight Protection Workers (SNTPV), must stop for one hour a day during the first week of strike. The following time, between October 16th and 21st, it increases to two hours.
During negotiations, the state-owned company proposed an adjustment of 4.83% to employees — the category wants 8.5%, which represents the replacement of inflation since the last agreement. The union also demands improvements in the conditions of health aid and competitions for administrative and operational areas.
The category explained that the strikes will be informed in advance to the airline, other related unions, Decea (Department of Airspace Control), among others, and that services that cannot be postponed will be maintained.
The new state-owned company was created by the Jair Bolsonaro government in December 2020 at the request of the military, and is the result of the division of Infraero (Brazilian Airport Infrastructure Company), which manages the administration of airports that have not yet been privatized in the country.
NAV Brasil professionals are the civil segment of the Airspace Control System (Sisceab). Air navigation services are also provided by the military segment, through the Airspace Control Department (Decea), of the FAB (Brazilian Air Force).
