MPB icon, João Donato dies, aged 88

Died at age 88, singer João Donato, in Rio de Janeiro (RJ). The information was confirmed by his family, who did not detail the cause of death.

“Today, heaven for composers dawned happier: João Donato went there to play his beautiful melodies. Now, his joy and his chords remain eternal throughout the universe”, informed the musician’s team, through Instagram.

The wake will be held at the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro and more details will be published soon.

Although he shaped MPB in the 1960s and 1970s with the elegance of his piano, and contributed with great classics, many with weighty collaborations in the lyrics — such as “A Rã” (Caetano Veloso), “Bananeira”, “A Paz (Leila IV)” and “Emoriô” (Gilberto Gil) —, Donato was not a media star and was never part of the so-called “schema”.
