The privatization of Eletrobras, carried out last year, was criticized by the Minister of Mines and Energy, Alexandre Silveira, during a joint hearing of the Commissions for Mines and Energy and for Finance and Control of the Chamber of Deputies, held this Tuesday (29) to discuss problems such as the blackout on the 15th.
According to him, there is a concentration of companies in the sector. “The privatization of the electricity sector was a wrong choice. I don’t think it’s right for a sensitive sector to be at the mercy of the private sector.”
He also pointed out that the model for transferring Eletrobras to the private sector, through the issuance of shares that dispersed control of the former state-owned company, was not designed to be used in strategic sectors or those involving national security. “We need to be more Brazil.”
The minister highlighted that the discussion on the privatization of Eletrobras is programmatic and legal. “We need investments, like foreign ones, in the electricity sector for the country to grow.”
