After her death, feeling lost, she saw in cocoa a way to restart her life. “Sometimes, when you have an income here in the region, the impression you have is that that work is not yours. Or it is your husband’s work that you are helping… I can say that it is not the first income [das Guardiãs]but it’s the first job they feel like protagonists”, she explains. Nayana Oliveira, one of the chocolatiers, divides her time between the factory, domestic chores, taking care of her children – one of whom, João, 11, has cerebral palsy – and school transportation in the community, which she runs with her husband. He didn’t want her to have an independent job. “But with the willpower I acquired, he can’t stop me from doing these things”, he says.
