Manaus starts multivaccination in urban, indigenous and riverside areas

Director of the National Immunization Program emphasized that the campaign was initiated by Manaus due to its proximity to Peru
Manaus(AM)- With the support of the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), the Municipality of Manaus started a national multi-vaccination campaign in urban, indigenous and riverside regions in the capital of Amazonas. The objective is to immunize children and adolescents from 0 to 14 years of age who are behind on doses in the basic vaccination schedule, thus increasing the vaccination coverage of these groups and preventing the reintroduction of diseases that have already been controlled or eradicated in Brazil.
The campaign is part of a joint undertaking by municipal management with the State Government and the Ministry of Health. With the support of PAHO, the arm of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Americas, governments are seeking to increase vaccination coverage in all Brazilian municipalities. Last Friday, during an event in Manaus, the director of the National Immunization Program (PNI) of the federal government, Eder Gatti, emphasized that the campaign started in Manaus and in the other municipalities of the State will be carried out throughout Brazil from this Monday (15). He reaffirmed that Amazonas, followed by Acre, which should open the campaign later this month, were considered a priority for the campaign because they border Peru, where a case of poliomyelitis was recently confirmed.
The mayor of Manaus, David Almeida, stressed that the joint initiative is essential to reach the most remote regions in the capital of Amazonas, which has the large territorial extension as one of the obstacles to achieving complete immunization.
“It is fundamental that spheres and organizations look at our city with an attentive eye to our peculiarities. We need to reach indigenous peoples, the riverside population, and provide health. This joint action will undoubtedly empower us to bring protection to those who need it most “, highlighted the mayor.
In addition to accompanying vaccinations at a UBS in the urban area and at Parque das Tribos, where more than 180,000 indigenous people of more than 30 ethnic groups live, Semsa’s technical and management teams also mobilized the Nossa Senhora de Fátima community, on the banks of the rio Negro, for multivaccination.
According to an estimate by the IBGE (2021), the population aged 0 to 14 years living in Manaus is 551,268 children and adolescents, of which 34,592 are younger than 1 year.
