Manaus (AM) – Editora Valer will launch this Saturday, July 22, 2023, at 9 am, in the auditorium of the Escola Normal Superior (ENS), of the State University of Amazonas (UEA), the launch of the second edition of the book “Manaus: Praça, cafe, school and cinema in the 1950s and 1960s”, by professor and historian José Vicente de Souza Aguiar.

The work focuses on Manaus – a city that has experienced rise and fall, greatness, decline and stagnation. It was seen by some as the Paris of the tropics and by others as a firewood port. “The city, after all, is at the same time the place of violence, oppression, repression, social inequalities, but also a space of freedom, of flight, of the transcendent, of going beyond the apparent. Therefore, it symbolizes the changes that enable the creation and recreation of social relations”,

said the author.

This book introduces us to a city from the perspective of its cultural life, with the surroundings of Praça Heliodoro Balbi as its radiating pole. The objective is to record the human activities carried out in public places, or for public use, but often for a generation, it served as an attempt to recover the feelings, emotions, symbolic, academic and political value of the activities carried out by those who adopted the Square. da Polícia, Cine Guarany, Café do Pina and Colégio Estadual as a reference for its cultural manifestations.

Professor José Vicente de Souza reveals the multiplicity of “squares” in the same environment as Praça da Polícia, as a meeting place, a point of reference for cultural activities and, above all, for having been the symbol of the Clube da Madrugada movement, which brought together intellectuals and poets, such as Jorge Tufic, Saul Benchimol, Alencar e Silva, Alcides Werk, Luiz Ruas, Antísthenes Pinto, Luiz Bacellar, Farias de Carvalho, among others. However, José Vicente points out the historical transitions and continuities, leading the reader to reflect on the present time.

For the editorial coordinator of Valer, professor, doctor in Philosophy and author of the book ‘Para aquém ou para Além de Nós’, Neiza Teixeira, says that this work recovers an important moment in the history of Manaus. “The book is an important document for understanding the city: what it was and continues to be, even with the countless changes it has undergone”,

Neiza said.
