Manaus has an LGBTfriendly beauty salon with 100% of its professionals LGBTQIAP+

Manaus (AM) – Exclusively for curly, frizzy, wavy and natural straight hair, Manaus has an LGBTfriendly beauty salon with 100% of its LGBTQIAP+ professionals. The reason is not by chance, since the unemployment rate is still high in the community.

According to research by the startup Se Candidate Mulher, 44.79% of LGBTQIAP+ women are unemployed. Higher than the general average of female professionals who are outside the labor market, being 39.35%.

According to the Center for Talent Innovation, 61% of LGBTQIAP+ employees hide their sexuality from managers and colleagues for fear of losing their jobs, and 41% of people consulted by the survey reported having suffered some type of prejudice in the workplace. The National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (Antra) estimates that 90% of the trans population in Brazil has prostitution as a source of income and the only possibility of subsistence.

“Matheus Sant Studio is a welcome space for this community, as four out of 10 LGBTQIA+ people report having suffered discrimination in the workplace, according to a survey conducted by LinkedIn. Overall, only 10% of employees in the job market declare themselves LGBTQIA+”,

reports Matheus Santiago, known as “Matheus dos Cachos”, the CEO of Matheus Sant Studio.

In addition to Matheus, the salon has ten LGBTQIAP+ employees and the goal is to expand the number of workers and services performed.

“The service is personalized, focused on the experience and welcome of each client. In addition, the salon has an instagrammable decor, vegan products and we offer complimentary beer and cappuccino for our customers”,

highlights the professional.

A symbol of welcome and resistance right in the center of “Paris of the Tropics”, the idea of ​​creating Matheus Sant Studio was born after an episode of homophobia in a commercial beauty establishment.

“I felt that Manaus needed to have an alternative welcoming space of beauty, so that there would be no room for more prejudice, a place of escape in the midst of so much discrimination. He wanted to be different from the rest”, says the CEO.

In 2019, Matheus suffered prejudice in a barbershop when he arrived hand in hand with his ex-boyfriend. He realized that the presence of the couple was clearly uncomfortable among professionals and customers of the establishment. But the case was not isolated. A lesbian friend of the hairdresser asked him to accompany her to a barbershop too for fear of suffering discrimination. This “turned the key” as an entrepreneur and turned on the alert for a need in the city.

“I realized that this fear is very recurrent in the LGBTQIAP+ community. So having a space where we can be included for who we really are is priceless. Our Studio is inclusive and not exclusive, so we also have heterosexual clients”,

emphasizes Matheus dos Cachos.

The salon opened in October 2021 to confirm the brand that Matheus dos Cachos conquered in the Manaus beauty market. The professional had to restructure after losing his job due to the pandemic in 2020. Without having anything to eat, he began to serve people with curly, curly and wavy hair at his aunt’s beauty salon, in the Japiim neighborhood, and gradually reached , more autonomy to have your own space.

New phase

June is an important time for the LGBTQIAP+ community as it is Pride month, with actions aimed at combating prejudice and meeting community demands. With Matheus Sant Studio it would not be different. The new phase at the salon has already started with the use of new products with organic and vegan bioactives to make customers even more beautiful.
